Dealing with the uncertainty of Life

Updated: Aug 13, 2022

Psalm 127 says except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman watches but in vain.

Most of the time we live assuming that life will be as good as it is especially when everything is going well until uncertainty strikes. We all desire to be certain of tomorrow regarding our lives but unfortunately, life is not a straight line. We are always dealing with challenges and we have to learn to benefit from them so that they can propel us to the next level.

It does not matter the level of uncertainty whether it’s the death of a loved one could a parent, a spouse a friend a brother or a sister, loss of a job this means no more source of income or unemployment, loss of a spouse may be divorce or separation meaning this person you loved and trusted so much is no more, could be loss of property may be your home or your business, could be loss of a scholarship meaning all the hope you had for your career and education is tumbling down, could be you are diagnosed with infirmity or an incurable disease. No matter what the situation is life will always be uncertain. We have to live knowing that nothing is permanent in life. The only thing that never changes on the earth is God, people, jobs, businesses, etc. they all change. Hebrew 13:8, says Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever, it’s only God who does not change but all other stuff change whether it’s a job, a spouse, a friend they are all bound to change.

Most of the time when events happen too fast they bring a sense of uncertainty throwing us into fear, pain, panic, regret, negative thoughts, and sometimes making us regret our decisions or making us make wrong decisions.

But we cannot live our lives worrying about tomorrow or what will happen next that will be doing a disservice to our lives and that might cause a mental breakdown. Worrying about the uncertainty will make you live an unfulfilled life. No matter the situation or circumstance, we should always have our trust in Jesus who is our hope and deliverer. We should be grounded in Christ. People living in the world without Christ having no faith in God are always hopeless and frustrated yet the bible says in Mathew 6:34 that therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Bible says lean not you’re your own understanding but trust in God psalms 121. That’s why it is clearly stated in the bible in proverbs 3:5-6 that Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

In this current time, we need to fully trust God if we are to live a fully fulfilled life. I have learned to be kind to myself. This does not mean I am selfish but it means I am treating myself with consideration and prioritizing myself. Most of the time we want to please everyone around us while ignoring ourselves. Learn to forgive yourself for any past mistakes. What is done is done and most of the time there is nothing that you can do that can alter that situation or that decision. Instead of worrying about the uncertainty just be kind to yourself and know you are not alone and you are neither the first nor the last. Manage your emotions do not allow yourself to stay angry, smile embrace life. You know some of the conditions we are in and the diseases we have, have been caused by over thinking about the uncertainty. When you take hold of your emotions, your decisions will be solid and will not live in regret and worry. When emotions drive you, you are easily blown with no direction.

Learn to invest in yourself whether its money or time you are worth the investment. This can be like learning a new skill, making new friends, taking a vacation, moving to a new home, buying new clothes, or a car or property. Uncertainty can cause you to forget about yourself and focus on others and things.

Always look for the good in any uncertainty. With the current covid 19 situation where people have lost their loved ones, others have lost jobs and businesses, it’s so easy to dwell on the bad and forget that in everything bad there is always something good. Look for the good in a bad situation for instance so many people have had a chance to connect with their families with the lockdowns, parents have had a chance to nurture their children, many businesses have opened up, people have adapted to online marketing. Let us embrace continuous learning and allow God to use every situation for the good.

We all have a chance to live a fulfilled life despite the uncertainty. We can trust God despite the challenges and know that He is the alpha and Omega; he who started a good work in us will surely accomplish it.
